Portola-Butler Continuation High School

Principal's Message

I want to welcome you to the Portola-Butler High School Website. The 2015-16 school-year officially starts on August 10th, but our offices will re-open on Monday July 20th. As the new principal of Portola-Butler I am excited to get the school-year "kicked off" as I begin this new chapter in my career and I can guarantee you that Portola-Butler High School will provide a rigorous and relevant education for all of our students. We want our students ready for post-secondary education and career ready when they leave Portola-Butler with their high school diplomas.

During the spring of 2015, we were visited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) the accreditation committee for the State of California. The Visiting Committee identified some key areas for follow-up that we need to address in our action plan to assist us in providing all of our students a quality education. We will be having some informational meetings this fall to address these key areas of follow-up, so please check back with us on the dates and times for these meetings. There will be further communication via the phone dialer and information coming home with the students.

We want to keep the momentum moving forward with our School Site Council (SSC) that was formed this past school year and we want this governing body to remain current as a viable decision making body for our school. I also want the students who will be attending in the fall to become more involved in co-curricular activities at Portola-Butler. I will be forming a Student Advisory Council to the Principal to work with me to create activities here on campus. There will be more information to come during pre-registration on this topic.

Finally, I want to again take this time to let you all know how much I look forward to working with all of you this school-year. They say it takes a village to have positive change and this is very true, but I want us all to become the village builders as we create opportunities for our students to become productive members of society. All of us working together can make this happen. Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” I have an open door policy, so please stop by and see me anytime. Thank you…

Dr. Steven James, Principal
